Welcome to the final ECTRIMS newsletter for 2013. The year has seen much positive progress in the area of multiple sclerosis (MS). Research in MS continues to abound, in both the basic science and clinical fields. Promising new disease modifying treatments for relapsing remitting MS have emerged, and a major international initiative has begun to focus on progressive MS, with the ultimate aim to expedite development of the first effective treatments for this phase of the condition. The year has also been a successful one for ECTRIMS, holding its largest ever Annual Congress (in Copenhagen in October), commencing two new educational and research-focused activities – the Focused Workshop and Summer School – and introducing a new MS nurse fellowship scheme. These and other activities are discussed below. We also would like to acknowledge the consistently high quality administrative support that ECTRIMS receives fr om Julia Bicher and the team at Congrex Switzerland. Our best wishes to you all for Christmas and 2014.
ECTRIMS 2013 Meeting in Copenhagen
The Annual Congress in Copenhagen was attended by more than 7500 participants, making it the largest congress yet held. The teaching courses were generally very well attended and mostly received considerable positive feedback from attendees. The attendance data and participant feedback has been helpful in deciding the teaching courses for the 2014 Congress, which will be a joint ACTRIMS-ECTRIMS meeting held in Boston, USA. An excellent and broad-ranging scientific programme was well attended throughout the week, and was supported by a fine social programme, highlights of which included the opening of the Congress by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, and an opening evening network event, where members of the ECTRIMS Executive Committee were available to meet Congress attendees. We warmly congratulate Professor Per Soelberg Sørensen and the Local Organising Committee for helping to make the 2013 Congress such an outst anding event.

ECTRIMS Fellowship Competitions 2013
The ECTRIMS Fellowship Programme competitions for 2013 are underway. The deadline for application for both the ECTRIMS Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Exchange Programme and ECTRIMS Multiple Sclerosis Clinical Training Fellowship Programme closed on December 1st 2013 and selection of successful candidates will be made the first half of 2014.
We draw your attention to the following two Fellowship Programme competitions for which the application deadline is 1 February 2014:
ECTRIMS Multiple Sclerosis Nurse Training Fellowship Programme
Application Deadline: 1 February 2014
This fellowship is offered to qualified/licensed European nurses to provide the opportunity for them to obtain additional expertise through practical nursing experience and training in a mentored MS environment in Europe. The aim of the programme is to enhance care and support of individuals with MS by fostering improved clinical care and education and by helping to promote best practices in nursing care throughout Europe.
ECTRIMS will support up to three fellowships each year, each with duration of 6 months to 1 year, with a stipend of up to €50,000. Training must be under the direction and mentorship of a senior MS nurse, in association with a senior MS clinician where appropriate, at a European clinical site with significant expertise in MS.
ECTRIMS-MAGNIMS Fellowship in Magnetic Resonance Imagining in MS
Application Deadline: 1 February 2014
ECTRIMS and the European MAGNIMS (Magnetic Resonance in MS) network jointly support a postdoctoral fellowship to foster the development of young researchers in magnetic resonance studies in MS. The goal of this programme is to achieve transfer and broadening of knowledge regarding the application of magnetic resonance to MS research and to promote the researcher’s integration into the international scientific community.
ECTRIMS will support two fellowships annually, each with duration of 1 year, with an annual stipend of up to €50,000.
Details about the ECTRIMS Postdoctoral Fellowship Programmes and application material can be obtained from the ECTRIMS web site: https://www.ectrims.eu/fellowships or by writing to the ECTRIMS Fellowship Administrator at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Update on ECTRIMS Business Plan
In 2013, ECTRIMS developed a business plan with the aim to define future direction and activities in areas of education and communication, professional training, regulatory affairs and scientific/clinical policy-making for better serving the needs of the European professional MS community as well as to further develop the main pillars of the strategy of ECTRIMS.
The public version of the business plan can be viewed here.
ECTRIMS Online Library
ECTRIMS has set up an attractive new service – the ECTRIMS Online Library – which offers the possibility to search for abstracts, webcasts, ePosters and presentations from the ECTRIMS 2013 congress by event, type of content and speaker/author and to view these publications online. To access the ECTRIMS Online Library please register here.
Focused Workshop 2013: outcome
In March 2013, an ECTRIMS-sponsored international workshop was held in London, UK on the topic “Pregnancy, Sex and Hormonal Factors in Multiple Sclerosis.” The workshop had many excellent presentations and lively discussion and involved participants with widely-ranging expertise in the field. We are pleased to report that a review paper based on the proceedings of the workshop and a review of literature will be published as a Topical Review in the Multiple Sclerosis Journal. The article will be made available for free through the journal’s open access programme.
ECTRIMS Summer School 2014
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR SUMMER SCHOOL 2014
ECTRIMS has initiated an annual Summer School to equip young physicians specialising on MS with up-to-date knowledge and expertise in MS research. The programme is limited in numbers of participants and held in European locations designed to facilitate discussion and interaction. It is anticipated that outcomes from each such programme will be published in an internationally recognized journal with wide dissemination.
The 2nd ECTRIMS Summer School will take place from 25-27 June 2014 in Tallinn, Estonia. The course will focus on ‘Genetics in MS’ and will offer an attractive programme of workshops and mentor groups, include the participation of well-known experts, and ensure in-depth coverage of the field. Participants with no previous knowledge in the field of genetics or who are at an early stage of their training will be invited to attend an introductory workshop on genetics research which will take place before the official start of the Summer School. The workshop will also cover the topics ‘How to read a genetics paper’ and ‘How to write a genetics paper’. Young scientists will also actively work in mentor groups and get concrete guidance on reading/producing genetics papers.
Are you interested in participating in the next ECTRIMS Summer School?
Information on the application process will be available on the ECTRIMS website at https://www.ectrims.eu/ectrims-summer-schools/ at the beginning of 2014. Please check the website regularly for updates.
